Session 4: Forgetfulness

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session you should be able to:

– Have strategies for overcoming painful situations for the client

– Know measures against forgetfulness

– Have tools to help in situations of forgetfulness

Introduction

It is quite normal to become more forgetful with age. You forget names, appointments, it’s harder to concentrate and you can’t cope with change quite as well.

In an advanced stage of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, the client may have forgotten the names of his or her closest relatives. Telephone numbers, birthdays, or their own home address can no longer be mentioned. Perhaps the client can no longer tell what he or she has just read or eaten.

All this is very stressful for the client, but also for the family and carers.
